VATLL’s Annual Conference is the premier conference for teaching, learning, and leading in Virginia designed for all roles at all levels throughout the entire Commonwealth. Beyond the Margins: What Works Best for Every Learner at Every Edge

Grounded in the science of learning and Visible Learning, this hands-on workshop invites educators to examine what works best - and for whom. Using evidence from effect sizes, how feedback works, and the science of how students learn, we will explore powerful scaffolding strategies that support vulnerable learners and those who are exceptionally ready. From making thinking visible to deliberate practice, we'll move beyond the margins of average instruction toward precise, intentional teaching that ensures every student experiences growth, clarity, and belonging in every lesson.

1. I can identify high-effect instructional strategies - drawn from Visible Learning research.
2. I can explain how scaffolding can be calibrated to meet the needs of both struggling and advanced learners in the classroom context.
3. I can explain how feedback works to move learners forward from their current point of understanding, regardless of where that starting point falls.
4. I can apply at least one principle from the science of learning - such as spaced practice, retrieval, or worked examples - intentionally differentiated across the readiness spectrum.
